Piercings of the tongue and lips could also be harming the teeth and gums. This finding comes from a Swiss study which looked at how piercings impact on dental health and it would seem that piercings on the tongue are not to be recommended.
Researchers looked at a group of fourteen patients with tongue piercings and found they were more prone to gum disease than those with lip piercings. Gum problems amongst the fourteen included:
In contrast, people with lip piercings “appeared unaffected by the jewellery” although a Belgian dentist noted that cracked teeth could be a problem.
