MEET THE TEAM

Dr Sunny Chagger BDS(UOB) after qualifying from The Univeristy of Birmingham trained in the latest implant techniques which have revolutionised dentistry in the past few years. Dr Sunny is currently undergoing his FGDP Implant Diploma at the Reknowned Royal College of Surgeons.

He is also a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentists(BACD), International Team of Implantologists (ITI), British Dental Association(BDA) and numerous other associations and faculties.

He also represents dentists and is the chair of the Clinical Governance Panel for the Newham Borough PCT, and has attended worldwide courses and lectured. Outside hours he enjoys reading, Squash, and travelling.

Dr Anita Chagger BDS(HONS) qualified from Birmingham University with honours and has participated in numerous seminars and is a member of many faculties. After completing her MFDGP (part 1) she took a career/maternity break working part time, but is back in the surgery most days.

Her interests are in cosmetic dentistry, including skin treatments such as Anti-wrinkle treatments, Boutulinum Toxin, and dermal fillers. Socially she enjoys cinema, and dinners and the company of her two little girls.

Dr Sejal Bhansali BDS(London) Sejal qualified from Guys in June 2000. Since then she has been working in General Practice. She was a Clinical Demonstrator at King's for a few years on the Acute Dental Care Department. She has also lectured at the GKT Dental Institute. Sejal joined Sunny Smiles Dental Innovations in 2007 and provides General Dental Treatment as well as Cosmetic Dentistry - including Tooth Whitening and has attended a number of courses in this subject. She is a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentists. She has a special interest in Periodontal Treatment. Sejal is a fully certified Invisalign Practitioner. In her spare time, Sejal is very social. She enjoys making the most of living in London! She plays the piano and has reached up to Grade 8.

Navid Sarrami BChD, MFD.IRL, MSc, MRD.RCSEd Specialist Prosthodontist
Dr Sarrami having received his schooling as an honorary Geordie in Newcastle Upon-Tyne, qualified in Leeds Dental Hospital in 1997. Subsequent to working as a Vocational trainee in Royal Leamington Spa he returned to St James Hospital, Leeds as a Maxillo-facial senior house officer. He then worked as a Community Dental officer at Harrogate District Hospital, and then as a Satff Grade surgeon taught at Manchester Dental School from 2000-2002 after which he entered a 4 year program as Specialist Registrar at the Newcastle Dental Hospital. As a registered specialist in Prosthodontics with over 10 years experience of providing NHS care both in practice and in hospital setting. Dr N. Sarrami currently provides clinical services in Newham for 6 sessions per week, and at Camden PCT for 4 sessions a week. Providing general dental care to adults and children under the NHS as well as provision of more complex work via referrals from colleague and surrounding practices. Dr Sarrami’s main passions outside work include Bikes, Badminton and Backgammon.

Dr Philip Kurland LDS Dr Philip Kurland qualified at Guy's Hospital, University of London and has concentrated his main interest in the field of cosmetic dentistry for over thirty years. He has been a consultant to the BBC for their colour television transmissions and has lectured and published original works internationally.

I qualified as a dentist in 1994 from the University of Benin, Nigeria and I have been working as a general dental practitioner in the UK since 2004. I provide general and cosmetic dentistry, conscious sedation for nervous patients and Clearstep® invisible braces. I am committed to continuous professional development which keeps me updated in my practising dentistry. I enjoy baking and spending time with family and friends.

Missing teeth? If you have missing teeth, whatever the reason for your missing teeth dental implants are a corrective procedure, bringing back that missing smile again.

Why should I replace missing teeth? 
 Your appearance is one reason. Another is that the gap left by a missing tooth can mean greater strain is put on the teeth at either side. A gap can also mean your "bite" is affected, because the teeth next to the space can lean into the gap and alter the way the upper and lower teeth bite together. This can then lead to food getting packed into the gap, which causes both decay and gum disease.
 
 
How are missing teeth replaced? 
 This depends on the number of teeth missing and on where they are in the mouth. The condition of the other teeth also affects the decision. There are two main ways to replace the missing teeth. The first is with a removable false tooth or teeth ? a partial denture. The second is with a fixed bridge. A bridge is usually used where there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth. You can also have a dental implant.
 
 
Can I have teeth which attach to the jawbone? (Dental Implant)

This factsheet on Dental Implants is for people who are considering having dental implants, or who would like information about them. 

Implants are an option for replacing missing teeth. They are placed directly into the jawbone, so they hold false teeth in place in the same way that the roots support your natural teeth. Implants can last for many years. 

About dental implants
A dental implant is a metal rod that is placed in the jawbone to hold a false tooth in place. They are usually made of titanium, a metal that is well-tolerated by the body. 

Over several months, the bone fuses with the metal implant. A small attachment is left protruding through the gum, and dentures or bridges can be screwed or clipped onto this attachment.

One dental implant can support one or more false teeth. Five or six implants are usually used to replace all the teeth in the jaw.

Why have dental implants?
There are a number of reasons why you may choose to have dental implants.

Implants are an alternative to conventional bridges and partial dentures. 
If you find that your denture moves around a lot in your mouth, dental implants may help to anchor the denture in place. 
When you lose teeth, your jawbone may start to shrink. Dental Implants can help slow down this process. 
Your dentist may recommend using implants to support a bridge rather than affecting healthy teeth either side of a gap (see Related topics). 
Dental Implants are not appropriate for everyone. You need to be in good general health, have healthy gums and your jawbone must be thick enough for the implant. There are, however, surgical procedures to increase the amount of bone in your jaw. Dental Implants are more likely to be successful if you don't smoke. Your dentist will advise you whether dental implants are a suitable treatment for you. 

Dental Implants may not be an option for people with chronic conditions such as poorly-controlled diabetes or osteoporosis (see Related topics). This is because the jaw may not heal properly and the implants may not fuse with the jawbone. If dental implants are not suitable for you, your dentist will discuss alternative treatments with you.

What are the alternatives?
You may choose to accept the space where a tooth is missing and do nothing. The alternatives to dental implants are dentures or bridges (see Related topics). 

Dentures - a denture is a removable replacement for a few missing teeth (partial denture) or a whole set of teeth (complete dentures). There are a variety of types of dentures, but they usually include a metal and/or acrylic (plastic) framework with plastic or porcelain artificial teeth. Dentures may sometimes become loose, making it difficult to eat and speak. One or more implants can be fitted to help support a denture. 
Bridges - a bridge consists of artificial teeth cemented onto adjacent natural teeth. 
What is involved?
Your dentist may be qualified to perform your dental implant surgery or may refer you to another specialist dentist.

You may need to have an X-ray or a CT scan so that the dentist can check the thickness of your jawbone and the position of other structures in your mouth. A CT scan uses X-rays to build up a three-dimensional picture of your teeth and mouth (see Related topics).

Dental Implant surgery is usually carried out under local anaesthesia in which case your mouth and the area around your mouth will be numb but you will stay awake. In some cases, sedation may be available; this relieves anxiety and causes temporary relaxation without putting you to sleep. For some patients, the procedure may be carried out under general anaesthesia which means that you will be asleep throughout the procedure and will feel no pain. 

A cut will be made in the gum and a hole will be made in the jawbone. The dental implant will be fitted into this hole.

Your dentist may place the dental implant into the tooth socket directly after your tooth has been taken out and replace the root of the natural tooth straight away. Alternatively the dental implant can be placed into the jawbone long after the tooth has been removed and the socket has healed.

Once the dental implant is in place, the gum will be stitched over it and the area will be left to heal. Stitches are usually removed after about a week. 

Sometimes your dentist can attach artificial teeth on the same day you have the implant. Usually, however, you will need to wait for between three and six months while your mouth heals before it can be fitted. The healing process allows time for your jawbone to fuse securely with the surface of the implant.

While your mouth is healing, your dentist may fit a temporary bridge or partial denture so you can't see the spaces between your remaining teeth. If you have complete dentures, they can generally be adjusted so that you can wear them throughout this period.

After the procedure
After your mouth has healed, you may need to have a second, smaller surgical procedure to uncover the gum over the top of the  implant. Your dentist will then fit your artificial teeth onto the implant. The teeth may be fixed permanently or be attached in a way that allows you remove them for cleaning. Your dentist will ensure that they fit properly, match your other teeth and feel comfortable. 

Deciding on treatment
Dental implants have a high success rate. The surgery is commonly performed and is generally safe. However, in order to make an informed decision and give your consent, you need to be aware of the possible side-effects and the risk of complications of this procedure. 

Side-effects
Side-effects are the unwanted but mostly temporary effects of a procedure. Examples of side-effects include some swelling and discomfort around the implant area. If you have any discomfort, take an over-the-counter painkiller such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet that comes with the medicine and ask your pharmacist for advice about whether it's suitable for your individual circumstances. 

Complications
The chance of complications depends on the type of procedure you are having and factors such as your general health. Complications can occur during or after the procedure. Most people aren't affected. The complications of any surgical procedure can include an unexpected reaction to the anaesthetic or infection. You are likely to be prescribed antibiotics and an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce the risk of your implant becoming infected.

Your lower jaw contains nerves which supply feeling to your tongue, chin, lower lip and lower teeth. In a small number of people, the nerves in the lower jaw can become bruised during implant surgery. This may cause a tingling or numb feeling in your tongue, chin or lip. This is usually temporary, but in a small number of people this altered sensation may be permanent.

On very rare occasions, the jawbone doesn't fuse with the implant properly and the implant may become loose. If this happens your dentist will need to remove the failed dental implant and wait until the bone has healed before attempting to place another implant.

Most dental implants are very successful, but the crowns, bridges and dentures that the implants support can be damaged just like normal teeth - for example, as a result of an accident, break or chip. The crowns, bridges or dentures are generally easily replaced, providing the implant underneath isn't damaged.

Dental Implants can last for many years but maintaining good oral hygiene is vital. To help maintain your dental implants you may have to spend more time than you did in the past thoroughly brushing and flossing your teeth. Your dentist will give you specific advice on caring for your dental implants. He or she will ask you to attend regular check-ups, and will usually take X-ray images each year to check your implants are still secure.
